St. George’s Episcopal Church launched their community outreach service with the Comfort Pillow
project on July 18th, 2002. Debbie Shumans’ cousin from California shared this project with her.
Their dream was to bring this ministry to the east coast and “grow” it here.

There is much about the mind-body connection that we don’t understand, but we do know that
caring adds comfort to those who are ill and receiving medical care. St. George’s can provide that
tangible element of comfort in the form of the little Comfort Pillows.

The pillows give the patients something to hold against the pain to let the softness of the pillow give
comfort and the message on the card lets them know there are people on the other side of the pillow
who care about them and wish them well in their journey to healing.

The congregation of St. George’s began their project at St. Joseph’s/Candler Health System in the
oncology units by providing these pillows on a monthly basis. It has now expanded to serve St.
Joseph’s Hospital, Candler Hospital, Memorial Health University Medial Center, the Lewis Cancer
and Research Pavilion and Low Country Cancer Care Associates.

We use the talents of all members of St. George’s as there is something that each can contribute,
whether it be cutting, sewing, printing or delivering of the finished product.
